James Gunn’s first Superman film had a Green Lantern in it, so it’s not a shock that the second one might too. What is a shock, however, is that the new Lantern is not the same as the first Lantern.
Man of Tomorrow, written and directed by James Gunn, brings David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult back as Superman and Lex Luthor in a battle against Brainiac (played by Lars Eidinger). And, apparently, they’ll somehow be joined by none other than John Stewart, a Green Lantern who’ll make his debut in the upcoming DC show Lanterns, played by Aaron Pierre.
The InSneider broke the news, and io9 reached out to DC Studios for comment or clarification. We’ll update this piece if or when we hear back.
Pierre’s Stewart will debut later this year on the show alongside Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. There’s no word on if that character will also appear in this film, but we’d imagine whatever happens at the end of that series will clue us in a bit more.
There’s also no word on if Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner in the movie, even though he is expected to appear in Lanterns. Basically, it’s unclear just how extensive a role the Lantern Corps plays in the film, but according to Sneider, Pierre’s role “won’t be a quick cameo, as Gunn’s sequel has forced him to turn down other projects in recent weeks.”
All of this makes perfect sense. Man of Tomorrow is going to be a more cosmic movie; hence, the images of Lex Luthor in spacesuits and the need for him to team up with Superman. Gunn has also been very open that the DC Universe he and co-president Peter Safran are building is a big, interconnected universe. So bringing in one of the heroes introduced this year into a movie next year is exactly what they’re going for.

Lanterns will debut on HBO Max in August, after the June release of Supergirl. Man of Tomorrow starts filming in April, aiming for a July 9, 2027 release. Pierre will also be seen next year in Star Wars: Starfighter.
