WRC champion Rovanpera announces circuit racing plans

World rally champion Kalle Rovanpera will make the step into circuit racing with an entry into the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux series.

The two-time world rally champion had indicted a wish to broaden his motorsport horizons after announcing plans that he and co-driver Jonne Halttunen will contest a partial World Rally Championship campaign this year, which begins at Rally Sweden next week.

The 23-year-old admitted late last year that he wanted to try other motorsport disciplines revealing that he had a target of testing and racing a GT car. In mid-January the Finn was linked to an entry in this year’s Fuji 24 Hours that takes place on 25-26 May.

However, Rovanpera has now confirmed that will complete a partial programme in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux. The Finn will jump into a 911 GT3 Cup car for four of the six rounds and the car will be serviced by Red Ant Racing, managed by Marc Goosens a former Formula Ford Festival winner, veteran Le Mans racer of 13 starts and race winner in Formula 3000.

“I am excited to announce my entry for the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux,” said Rovanpera in a social media post.

“This will be my first racing project. I will take part in four weekends this year. Big thanks to Unibet, Red Ant Racing and Toyota Gazoo Racing for this opportunity.”
