We thought it was a One Wish Willow, but maybe there’s a second one in there. After wowing audiences with his horrifyingly layered performance in the surprise hit, Obsession, Michael Johnston is about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. He’s in talks to star alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the new Mummy film from Radio Silence.
The InSneider, who first reported the news, didn’t mention who Johnston will play but, at 30 years old, he sure seems just about the right age to potentially play Alex, the son of Rick O’Connell (Fraser) and Evy Carnahan (Weisz). That’s purely speculative, though. Maybe he’s the film’s villain or someone else entirely. It’s unclear. But the Alex character was 8 in the 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, so assuming everyone is going to age in real time, it’s certainly in the ballpark of all involved.
Those also include the film’s directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, its writer David Coggeshall, and John Hannah, who’ll return as Evy’s brother, Jonathan. The film, which doesn’t yet have an official title, will ignore the events of the third film in the franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which recast Evy. And that’s about all we know about it.
Starring in a movie like Obsession is a huge deal, though, and you can see that Johnston took his time to line up his next film with care. The new Mummy is certainly befitting of a follow-up. Of course, Johnston’s excellent performance almost pales in comparison to his Obsession co-star, Inde Navarrette, who has yet to line up a follow-up project. However, you can bet she has her pick of basically anything out there, and we can’t wait to see it. Hey, maybe she can play something in this film!
