In een intern rapport dat vandaag is gepubliceerd, erkent het Israëlische leger (IDF) zijn ‘volledige falen’ om de aanval van Hamas op 7 oktober 2023 te voorkomen.
Bij deze aanval verloren honderden Israëliërs het leven. "7 oktober was een totale mislukking; de IDF (het leger) faalde in zijn taak om de Israëlische burgers te beschermen," verklaarde een IDF-functionaris naar aanleiding van het rapport. "Er stierven te veel mensen die dag, en burgers vroegen zich in stilte of hardop af waar de IDF was."
Het Israëlische leger geeft in het onderzoek ook toe dat het leed aan zelfoverschatting en de militaire capaciteiten van Hamas fors heeft onderschat. Het onderzoek toont aan dat de aanval van Hamas in drie fasen plaatsvond. Tijdens het hoogtepunt van de aanval waren er meer dan 5000 strijders uit Gaza op Israëlisch grondgebied aanwezig.
