For almost 20 years International Formula 3000 served as the main training ground for Formula 1 before it was replaced by GP2 for 2005.

During that time the likes of Jean Alesi and Juan Pablo Montoya clinched the title before forging respectable careers in the top-flight of single-seater racing, yet many top drivers passed through F3000 without becoming champion: Mark Webber, Alex Zanardi et al.

So, from drivers that eventually became grand prix winners to conquerors of the Indianapolis 500 and heroes of sportscar racing, Autosport has ranked the 10 best nearly-men of F3000 in the latest podcast.

Alongside Kevin Turner and James Newbold is special guest David Sears, who was the boss of Super Nova Racing which delivered titles for Montoya, Sebastien Bourdais, Vincenzo Sospiri and Ricardo Zonta.

He reveals all on the Super Nova drivers that made the list and reflects on those he raced against during a glittering career that morphed into becoming a team owner and driver manager.
