What was she waiting for, huh? Well, maybe more money! When the news broke of an upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel/reboot in early 2023, reports were the original star Jennifer Love Hewitt was returning. But, since then, Hewitt has been mum on the subject. Until now. This Friday the 13th, Julie James herself announced she’s going back to see about a man with a hook.
“It’s never too late to go back,” the actress posted on Instagram. “Julie James is returning. I know what you will be doing next summer!”

The reboot, which started filming last week, also brings back Hewitt’s surviving co-star Freddie Prinze Jr., who was already confirmed. The pair survived the 1997 original, and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Those were then followed by a direct-to-DVD sequel and a TV show, but this movie will ignore those.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is directing the film which will, kind of perfectly, follow in the mold of the Scream franchise, which is what I Know What You Did Last Summer did originally. In both, old characters are returning to a story that’s more about the new characters as a way to pass the torch. (See also Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and this very appropriate speech in the fifth Scream movie).
The new cast includes Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. There’s no word just how large Hewitt’s role will be, or Prinze Jr.’s for that matter, but the fact they are in it is the main thing. Having those legacy characters there legitimizes the whole film. We’re just curious why, year after year, kids in these towns mistakenly kill guys, lie about it, and then face the consequences. Maybe stop doing that.
All joking aside though, the photo Hewitt posted may have a clue. The messages Julie is getting all seem to tag a particular Instagram account. We guess this killer is on the Gram.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer is coming this summer, on July 18.
