James Cameron Is Still Working on Mysterious New Terminator Stuff

A new Terminator animated show is coming out this month but franchise creator James Cameron has nothing to do with it. Instead, he once again teased that he’s working on something Terminator himself, though he won’t say what it is.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Cameron was asked about the new Netflix show Terminator Zero that starts August 29 and responded with the following. “It looks interesting,” he said. “My relationship to that is very much like The Sarah Connor Chronicles—other people spinning stories in a world I set in motion is interesting to me. What’s their takeaway? What intrigued them about it? Where are they going with it? It looks like they’re going back to the root cause of Judgment Day—the nuclear war—and whether that’s an ultimate timeline. I’d be curious to see what they’ve come up with. I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that. Like with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, they occasionally touched on things I had been playing with completely independently. So there’s some curiosity there. It’s not a burning curiosity, but, obviously, it’d be nice to see it succeed.”

The reporter keyed in on Cameron saying “I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that” and followed up. Cameron’s response: “It’s totally classified. I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.”

Cameron should take his own advice then. Back in 2022, three years after the underrated Terminator: Dark Fate, Cameron hinted there might be a new film in the works. A year later, he mentioned it again, saying he was waiting to see how the world embraced AI before moving ahead. So clearly this is something he’s been thinking about and maybe even working on. And, it won’t have anything to do with the new show. But for us Terminator fans out there who thought Dark Fate was exactly that for the franchise, as long as Cameron keeps mentioning it, we know there’s a chance.

Head over to the Hollywood Reporter to read the whole interview, in which Cameron confirms he’d like to direct all the Avatar movies, squashes a beef with another famous director, and just generally gets really saucy.
