Deadpool & Wolverine is Destined to Become the Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movie of All Time

Deadline reports Deadpool and Wolverine has officially crested the $1 billion threshold at the box office, and is destined to become the high-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

According to the outlet, the threequel’s domestic box office currently sits at $494.3M. With its international revenue now at $535.2M, as of this writing, the film has altogether garnered an astonishing $1,029.5B and is on target to surpass The Joker‘s $1.079B gross “by the end of this week.” Impressively, this is Disney’s second billion-dollar movie just this year, hot on the heels of the PG-rated Inside Out 2. Only 55 movies have ever passed the $1,000,000,000 mark, and Disney can claim ownership to 31 of those tiles. Mickey’s red shorts must have very deep pockets, indeed.

On the list of highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time, Deadpool 2 and Deadpool respectively sit as number four and five, surpassed only by Oppenheimer at three and The Joker at number one. Hugh Jackman’s previous Wolverine movie, Logan, is number nine on that list.

By Hollywood logic, this may set a bone-chilling precedent. Scrolling down the list just a bit further is 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded at six, one notch above 2017’s It at number seven–and Warner Bros. owns both. If Deadpool + Wolverine = one-billion dollars, it stands to reason uploading Pennywise to the Matrix could additionally prove a tremendous financial success. It’s actually similar to an idea we suggested just last month. Alternatively, Warner Bros. also owns The Joker, so a Pennywise/Arthur Fleck killer clown team-up is guaranteed to have been floated in a boardroom at least once. Come to think of it, Fleck’s accidental folk hero status would actually be on-brand for both his character and The Matrix franchise, too. Could The Joker be The One?

At number eleven, is another Todd Philips joint at Warner Bros., The Hangover: Part II. Here’s a billion dollar concept: After a night of drinking, the Joker awakens in the Matrix and triggers the creation of Pennywise the Clown, which… no, let’s not give Hollywood any ideas.
