Legendary Will Bring Neal Stephenson’s Seveneves to TV Life

If you’ve been enjoying recent sci-fi shows like 3-Body Problem and For All Mankind, there’s a new show coming to the stable. Neal Stephenson’s sci-fi novel Seveneves is coming to the small screen with a TV adaptation.

Per Deadline, Legendary TV has acquired the TV rights for the 2015 novel. The book centers on the planet’s best scientists all realizing that an incoming meteor is going to shatter the moon into seven pieces on impact, and by extension, kill humanity in the next two years. With a ticking clock, the world’s nations band together to find a way to ensure the human race survives. And after significant time jump, the book then shifts focus to explore the aftermath of humanity’s preservation efforts, so you can imagine how that might make for a good television show. At time of writing, it’s unclear which streamer or network will be the one to pick up the series, since Legendary has worked with everyone from Netflix and NBC to Prime Video and HBO.

After its release, Seveneves got pretty good reviews. It was up for a Hugo Award in 2016, and won the Prometheus Award for best novel that same year. At one point, it was even going to be adapted as a movie courtesy of Skydance, and with Ron Howard to direct. Those plans seem to have quietly died over time, opening the door for this show to happen. With a resurgence of sci-fi in TV over the last few years (and forward-thinking sci-fi at that), now’s apparently the right time to try bringing this book to life, so hopefully it comes to fruition in the near future.
