It looks like Spotify is on tap to get the AI treatment from Google Gemini. Android Authority spotted a Spotify extension for Google Gemini in a recent APK teardown of the Google App (version 15.30.27.29). That means soon, you’ll be able to control the music streaming app via Google’s AI platform. Gemini currently has similar functionality for YouTube Music.
The extension will allow Gemini to play both music and podcasts. It also gives Gemini access to your Spotify playlists and history. That could mean that the AI could spark a conversation about your music tastes in the near future or perhaps ask why you’ve been playing “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace all morning. I am more than a little concerned about what “parts of your conversation and relevant info” you’ll be giving Gemini access to so it can play your latest earworm.
Android Authority managed to get the extension to work, and while it’s clear it’s not ready for prime time, it’s still intriguing. When trying to play a song, the writer noted that a YouTube Music card initially pops up, but the chosen song does play on Spotify.
If you use the chatbot and type “@spotify” and the title of whatever song you want to listen to, it’ll play the music in the background instead of launching the app. I’m curious if the extension will pull songs via lyric search or humming a lá “Name that Tune,” a feature for which apps like Shazam are known.
While it looks like the extension is close to being ready, we don’t know if this will be a free service or if the cost will be baked into a Spotify or Gemini subscription.
