If there are three things I like it’s collecting toys, Comic-Con, and Marvel Studios. That’s why I jumped at the chance for a very cool opportunity blending all three.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Deadpool & Wolverine opens this weekend, one of the biggest Marvel movies in years. And to celebrate that opening weekend in its own unique way, Funko allowed fans at San Diego Comic-Con to “Pop Yourself” as one of the two characters. It’s a massive operation that happens on the floor at the con and, while wildly busy, is also incredibly fun.
Once you get to the front of the line, a special QR code directs you to a site where you sign into your Funko account and choose which character you want to be: Deadpool or Wolverine. From there, you choose body type, skin tone, hairstyle, and a few other features to get the Pop as close to you as possible. You then pick some accessories, such as the Comic-Con exclusive TVA TemPad, pay $50 each (a fee Funko waved for press covering the experience) and boom, you’re ready to go. A few hours later, an email shows up, you head back to the booth, and voila. You’re a Funko Pop of Deadpool or Wolverine.
While there were a few technical issues during my specific experience, mostly due to the insane strain on the WiFi, the team at Funko was amazing, fixing the problems and making sure I got just the Pop I wanted. Meanwhile, a peek in the back of the booth saw cartons and cartons of different pieces, almost like a Funko Pop graveyard, as an army of employees worked to put them together.
The result? It’s pretty sweet.
The good news for those not in San Diego is that this isn’t just something being restricted to Comic-Con. For more info on that Pop Yourself experience, and to do it yourself at home, head to this link.
