What We Do in the Shadows‘ Most Mysterious Characters Will Emerge in Season 6

Over the past five seasons, we’ve learned a lot about What We Do in the Shadows‘ hilariously dysfunctional vampire roommates, as well as the almost-vampire Guillermo. But as the FX show moves into its sixth and final season, it’s finally time to learn more about the most important Shadows characters we’ve never actually seen: the human camera crew that documents their every move.

At San Diego Comic-Con’s What We Do in the Shadows panel, fans got a sneak peek at the season six premiere episode, which arrives on FX October 21. There’s a moment where an outsider asks the roommates why, exactly, they’re allowing their traditionally top-secret vampire lives to be filmed by a bunch of humans. It’s startling for the characters, but also for the audience—What We Do in the Shadows is obviously styled as a mockumentary, but it’s also very easy to forget that there are unseen characters in the mix as part of that set-up.

“There’s definitely a dynamic [between the vampires and the film crew] that does get opened [up more] towards the later end of the season in a very meta way that was fun to make,” producer and director Kyle Newacheck shared from the SDCC stage. “It’s a question we always asked ourselves: what does the documentary [crew] know? How much do we know about them, and whatnot? I will say that that I did get to play a director on the show at a certain point while I was directing the show, which was the most meta thing I’ve ever been a part of. And it was it was an absolute blast.”

Added Mark Proksch, who plays Colin Robinson, “Coming from The Office, that was my first role, so I feel like I mostly film mockumentaries [laughs]. So it just feels natural to me, having them be around. And we actually highlight the idea that it’s a documentary this year in a really interesting and fun way. It just caters to comedy.”

What We Do in the Shadows returns October 21 for its sixth and final season on FX.
