The number of states without access to Pornhub continues to grow. Nebraska is the latest state to pass an age verification law resulting in the giant porn site closing off access to Cornhuskers.
Nebraska Legislative Bill 1092 went into effect on Friday making it a requirement for sites that show adult content to verify the age of users. This usually means some form of identification needs to be uploaded to the site to confirm the person using the site is 18 or over. Pornhub’s parent company Aylo refuses to obtain these kinds of personal documents from its users so, as it has done in Texas and other states, it banned access to the porn site as of Monday this week, according to a report from the Nebraska Examiner.
“Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years, but we believe that any law to this effect must preserve user safety and privacy, and must effectively protect children from accessing content intended for adults,” the company told Gizmodo back in April. “Unfortunately, the way many jurisdictions worldwide have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous. Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy.”
Aylo stressed that it doesn’t want adult material to be seen by minors, but the company claims users just go to sites that don’t comply with the law. VPNs are also a way to get around the age verification laws and searches for them tend to grow in states that have passed these kinds of laws.
Louisiana was the first state to pass an age verification law, it went into effect at the start of 2023. Since then, a dozen more states have followed suit with similar laws. The Supreme Court plans on hearing the case of Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton in the fall.
