‘Honey, I Shrunk the Art Show’ Is Full of Fantastically Tiny Portraits

Every art show needs a theme. Maybe it’s all the work of one artist. Maybe it’s all centered on one subject. Some of the ideas are really, REALLY big. And, in some cases, the idea is to keep it very, very small.

This Friday, Gallery 1988 will reveal a new online exhibit called “Honey, I Shrunk the Art Show,” curated by two artists who love to make small art: Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo. The io9 favorites have long teamed up with the Los Angeles gallery to do awesome shows, many of which have included tiny pop-culture portraits. This time though, the Philadelphia-based friends thought bigger, but also smaller.

“Gallery 1988 reached out to us and asked us to create a new show for them,” Whalen told io9 via email. “Dave and I thought after doing so many two-man shows together, it might be fun to invite a bunch of our talented friends to join us in creating a curated show. We had a few ideas, and eventually settled on an ‘80s themed show with a twist; all pieces have to be 6 x 6 inches or less. Everyone that we invited ran with the idea and the results speak for themselves.”

He’s right. Here’s a preview.

All pieces in the show will be on exhibit and on sale on the Gallery 1988 website around 2 p.m. ET on Friday, July 19.

Above you see pieces from not just Perillo and Whalen, but other io9 faves like Eric Tan and Cuddly Rigor Mortis. We asked Whalen in particular why he decided to try something new with those horror-based cards.

“I’ve been itching to do trading cards for quite a while,” he said. “I found a vendor that produces high-quality, low-run trading cards, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to launch my new line of small art pieces. If people respond to them, I’d love to continue the line with many, many more movie icons.”
