The 2023 Hugo Awards Nominees Are Here

It’s that time of year again: Chengdu Worldcon has released the full list of nominees for this year’s Hugos, the premiere science fiction and fantasy awards ceremony highlighting the best in books, film, TV, and criticism in genre material.

This year marks the 81st WorldCon, the traditional home of the Hugo Awards winners ceremony, taking place this year in Chengdu, China between October 18 to 22. More than 25,000 entries were submitted for nomination for this year’s awards, with Chengdu WorldCon noting that 2023 will mark “the largest-ever participation of non-English speaking members in the history of the Hugo Awards.”

Highlights this year include a killer set of books up for Best Novel, including Tamsyn Muir’s Nona the Ninth and John Scalzi’s Kaiju Preservation Society, as well as Kyle Buchanan’s Blood, Sweat & Chrome retelling of the production of Mad Max Fury Road getting a nod for Best Related Work. In film and TV, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Turning Red, Nope, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and the entire first season of Severance will duke it out in the long form Dramatic Presentation category, while Andor will battle itself in short form category—with nominations for two breakout episodes of its debut season, “One Way Out” and “Rix Road”—alongside episodes of The Expanse, Stranger Things, For All Mankind, and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.
